Best Spots to Enjoy Architecture in Bern
Bern, the enchanting capital of Switzerland, stands out for its beautifully preserved medieval cityscape, a living testament to its rich history and cultural heritage. Unlike many bustling metropolises, Bern exudes a tranquil charm; its streets, while lively, never feel overwhelming or excessively crowded.
This serene ambiance makes it an ideal destination for those who, like myself, have a deep appreciation for architecture but prefer a more relaxed, less congested urban experience.
The city harmoniously blends architectural splendor with a laid-back atmosphere, offering a unique and delightful experience. Below, I’ve highlighted some of Bern’s most stunning architectural sites, each with its own story and allure:
Old Town Houses: The Old Town of Bern is lined with sandstone facades and features unique 16th-century fountains, six kilometers of arcades (Lauben), and historic townhouses. These well-preserved structures provide an authentic glimpse into the city’s past life and are great examples of medieval urban architecture.
The Federal Palace (Bundeshaus): Serving as the seat of the Swiss government, the Federal Palace impresses with its Renaissance Revival architecture. The grandeur of its dome and the detailed frescoes depicting Switzerland’s history make it a striking symbol of national governance.
Bern Cathedral (Berner Münster): The Bern Cathedral is the tallest cathedral in Switzerland, showcasing impressive Gothic architecture. Its intricate façade, stained glass windows, and the towering spire offer panoramic views of the city and the distant Alps.
Nydegg Church: Situated at the eastern end of the Old Town, Nydegg Church is a Reformed church with origins dating back to the 13th century. Its modest yet beautiful architecture stands in contrast to the city’s more grandiose buildings, offering a sense of tranquility and history.
The Holy Ghost Church (Heiliggeistkirche): Known for its significant size and baroque style, the Holy Ghost Church is one of the largest Swiss Reformed churches in Switzerland. Its plain exterior contrasts with a richly decorated interior, including an impressive organ.
Zytglogge (Clock Tower): The Zytglogge is a landmark medieval tower in Bern’s Old Town, known for its astronomical clock built in the early 15th century. This ornate clock is a masterpiece of early timekeeping technology and is adorned with moving figurines that perform at each hour.
The Einstein House: While not grandiose, the Einstein House is significant for its association with Albert Einstein, who lived there while working at the Bern Patent Office. It’s a typical Bernese residence from the period and has been preserved to reflect the early 20th-century style.
Käfigturm (Prison Tower): The Käfigturm is another medieval tower that once served as a prison. Its historical significance and distinctive structure make it a notable architectural feature in the city’s skyline.
The Roof Tops of Bern: Last but by no means least, the rooftop terraces dotted around Bern are the perfect place to enjoy the views of the city, countryside and Alps in the far distance.
We spent so much time on the roof of our hostel either eating our food, having a drink or watching and listening to the locals dancing in the square out front. If you don’t get chance to dine on one of the many rooftop terraces around the city, then head to the Einstein Museum for another wonderful view across the city and mountains.

Enjoy an easy trip to the Alps
One thing I soon realised when planning my trip was the proximity of Bern to the Swiss Alps. After visiting Switzerland several times before and traveling by both car and train; you can get to Interlaken and Jungfrau region with ease. Which was exactly what we did. We went to the Jufraujoch and visited Lauterbrunnen on this trip on an epic train journey to the top of Europe (which I highly recommend).
We could see the stunning snow-capped peaks of Eiger, Jungfraujoc, and Moch from our rooftop terrace at our accommodation in Bern all week and it continued to call to us.
